Observations

• Addition of QoS extensions to OSPF was not an overly complex task

  • Minor impact to topology database and LSA generation/reception process
  • Some possible improvements, but benefits are unclear

• LSA processing dominates overall overhead

  • Use of coarse triggering policies and hold-down timers can reduce it substantially
    • Increasing threshold from 10% to 80% yields order of magnitude reduction in cost
    • Impacts tail of load distribution as well

• Path pre-computation can be beneficial with coarse triggering policies

  • Small performance hit even with large pre-computation periods

• Bandwidth requirements of LSA are marginal
